PANGKOR THE PARADISE ISLAND

A visit to Perak is never complete without a trip to Pangkor Island, a small island on the northwest coast of Malaysia, in the Straits of Malacca. Pangkor Island is located, 90 km south west of Ipoh. It is separated from the peninsular by the Malacca Straits and Dingding Straits. It is the largest of nine islands. Other island surrounded Pangkor Island are Pulau Simpan, Pulau Kijang, Pulau Pangkor Laut, Pulau Nipis, Pulau Batu Mandi, Pulau Batu Tengah, Pulau Sembilan, Pulau Mentagor and Pulau Giam.

Pangkor Island is one of the most beautiful islands in Malaysia. It is renowned for its charming tropical surrounding, pristine beaches and world class Island resort. While travelling around the island you are guaranteed picturesque views of crystalline blue water and cool refreshing breeze. With warm weather all year round any time is a great time to visit Pangkor Island.

Historically, Pangkor was a refuge for seamen who sailed through the Straits of Malacca. The Pangkor Treaty, signed on 20 January 1874 on the island of Pangkor between British and the Sultan of Perak is significant in history of the Malay states as it signalled official British involvement in the politics of the Malays. It marked the first British intervention into the Malay Peninsular except for Malacca which led to the Perak war in 1875. It was also the beginning of British rule in the Malay States.

Pangkor has a land area of 8 squares kilometers and a population of approximately 25,000 inhabitants comprising mostly of fisherman. While the island is today one of the biggest fish suppliers in Peninsular Malaysia it is more renowned a world class holiday destination. It is famous for its low budget to 5 star accommodation. Pangkor is well served by world class holidays resort such as Pangkor Laut Resort and Pangkor Island Beach Resort.

Apart from local tousist the island is extremely popular island destination for backpackers from Europe, holiday makers from Singapore. It gets extremely busy during school holidays and public holidays.
