SPASTIC (DAYCARE)/ORPHANAGE CENTRE

Exclusive interview with Puan Hasmah Hj Hamzah, the kind-hearted woman who has devoted her life in building and running the Spastic/Orphanage Centre since 1988.

Pusat Harian Kanak kanak Spastik/Yatim Ipoh (PHKKS) was formed in October 1988 (Reg. no 2967/88-Perak) with only 5 (five) spastic children. The primary aim of the centre is to provide free daycare services, education and training for the mentally retarded/disabled children from poor family. It is also to house orphans, abandoned and poor children. With initial contribution of RM1000 (Ringgit Malaysia One Thousand only) from the committee members, the centre then operated as a daycare centre at the community hall in Kampong Pasir Putih, Ipoh with a monthly rental of RM200.00. The hall was eventually donated to the centre (in 1992) by the late Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Seri Haji Wan Mohamed Bin Wan Teh who was then the Chief Minister of Perak. Yang Berbahagia Datin Seri Hajjah Maria binti Mahmud, wife of YAB then, was appointed as life patron for the centre.

Throughout nineteen years in operation, the centre has carried out numerous activities. Thanks to dedicated committee members and staff who have done enormous job, indeed the centre is grateful to those who had sacrificed their time to faithfully discharge the duties entrusted unto them.

Today, PKHKS has manpower size of 12 taking care of 80 persons on its register. This includes mentally retarded children, spastic/disabled, orphans and poor and abandoned children ages from 2 to 30 years. Apart from spastic, down syndrome, poor children and orphans, there are 30 poor and neglected old folks registered with the centre. Though they are not staying in the centre, their welfare and basic needs are taken care of by the centre. The committee members make a monthly visit to their respective homes to deliver kitchen provision to meet their basic needs.

The PHKKS has made a remarkable progress and has started a skill training centre. The centre provides moral support and spirit building not only to mentally retarded but also to parents to come to term with their children’s condition which require special attention. Staff of the centre are dedicated. They make home visits and often interview parents with the aim to understanding the children better.

The physical aspect of the centre have improved tremendously. The hall which was previously used as a training centre is more spacious to enable more indoor activities with the children. There is a mini library at one corner of the hall providing information facilities on matters pertaining to disabilities as well as reading materials for those who are registered with the centre.

There is also a recreational area for the children and youth to keep them occupied.

The only place that needs to be equipped is the therapy room for the disabled. Every endeavour is being made at the moment to raise fund of RM35,000.00 to improve the facility of this room.
