GOD'S LITTLE ACRE

The remembrances attracted a crowd of about over 150 with supporters from NMBVA Australia and the UK, ex-servicemen locally and from overseas, High Commissioners and senior officials of the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India and Nepal High Commissions. Together with these and related events annually not only more and more are visiting from overseas but also a common bondage between overseas visitors and locals is building.

While the focus is to remember all the fallen Dato' R. Thambipillay also organized a goodwill gathering at the Royal Ipoh Club on Friday 8 June 2007 where more than 100 persons, particularly from overseas who came to attend the annual remembrance ceremonies which was held the next day on 9 June 2007.At the gathering Our National Anthem was played followed by the “Merdeka Cake” cutting ceremony.

Realising that these overseas visitors have been coming here for many years, Dato Seri DiRaja Dr Mohamad Tajol Bin Ghazali, the Chief Minister of Perak has personally invited them to his residence and entertained them on a few occasions to reciprocate their visits.

Dato' R. Thambipillay also published two books to commemorate the fallen at Batu Gajah & another the Roles and Responsibilities of Royal Malaysia Police during the Emergency 1948 to 1960.

The first two books entitled “God’s Little Acre 1948 to 1960 with a revised edition was launched by Tun Mohammed Hanif Omar (IGP-retired) on 28 May 1998 and the third book entitled ”The Malayan Police Force in the Emergency 1948 to 1960” was launched on 15 June 2003 by Dato Seri Diraja (Dr) Mohamad Tajol bin Ghazali, the Chief Minister of Perak. These books contain valuable information about the crucial years of the Emergency and the beginnings of the Remembrance ceremony in Batu Gajah. The book highlights on the roles and responsibilities of the Royal Malaysia Police and how magnificently it acquitted themselves at considerable sacrifice fighting for the defence of Malaya.

After painstaking research, both locally and overseas, he came up with stories of how the 116 victims of the terrorists buried in Batu Gajah met with their untimely death including rolls of honour, photographs of tombs not only in Perak but also certain Planters and Police Officers buried in other parts of Malaysia and Singapore.

One wonders that if Dato' R. Thambipillay did not initiate this remembrance ceremony at Batu Gajah on 10th April 1980 comprehensively and officially to remember the 116 victims (including the first three British planters), the name “God’s Little Acre” will not be in existence to-day. It is pertinent to say this because no one thought (except individuals or group) of remembering these 116 victims who are buried in Batu Gajah since 1948 until 1980 (nearly 32 years). The programme set than is one forerunner to subsequent programmes except that participation has enhanced and put it in strong footing for the next years as part of the "Police Week" programme.
